Turtle 1
Adult & Toddler
Progressions:
- Recognise the instructor
- Enter the water safely
- Kick and recover to standing
- Walk through the water
- Travel on front, turnaround and return
- Travel on back and stand up
- Blow and propel an object
- Navigate obstacles
- Push and glide on the front
- Exit the water safely
Additional information:
- The presence of a swimming teacher or assistant in the water is optional
- Buoyancy aids may be used to support the swimmer’s confidence and ability

Turtle 2
Adult & Toddler
Progressions:
- Understand poolside safety
- Safe water entry
- Blow bubbles
- Travel 2 metres on front blowing bubbles and stand up
- Travel 2 metres on back with alternating leg kick and stand up
- Star float
- Paddle and play – travel with a ball
- Push and glide on the back
- Roll from front to back
- Safe exit
Additional information:
- A swimming teacher or assistant in the water is optional
- Buoyancy aids may be used as needed to support skill development and confidence

Turtle 3
Adult & Toddler
Progressions:
- Learn how to recognise poolside safety signs
- Safe entry, move forward and return, safe exit
- Submerge face and blow bubbles
- Star float on back
- Travel 5 metres on back
- Travel 5 metres on front using a ‘doggy paddle’ arm action
- 360o turn with feet off the floor
- Roll from back to front and return to back
- Jump or step into the water holding parent/teacher’s hand
- Treading water action on a seahorse (noodle)

- Buoyancy aids may be used to support confidence and skill-building

Stage 1
Non Swimmer 1
Progressions:
- Enter the water safely
- Move 5 metres forwards (walk, jump or travel)
- Move 5 metres backwards (walk, jump or travel)
- Scoop the water and wash the face
- Be comfortable with water showered from overhead without goggles
- Flat floating position on the back to regain standing
- Flat floating position on the front to regain standing
- Push and glide in a flat position on the front from a wall
- Push and glide in a flat position on the back from a wall
- Give examples of two pool rules
- Travel 5 metres unaided on front and back in water out of their depth
- Exit the water safely

Stage 2
Non Swimmer +
Progressions:
- Jump in from poolside safely without goggles
- Travel 10 metres unaided on front and back in water out of their depth
- Unsupported, flat floating position on the back to regain standing
- Unsupported, flat floating position on the front to regain standing
- Push and glide on the back – arms by the side or above the head
- Push and glide on the front – arms by the side or above the head
- Unsupported and unaided, travel 5 metres kicking on back
- Unsupported and unaided, travel 5 metres kicking on front blowing rhythmical bubbles
- Float on front, tuck to rotate, float on back to regain standing
- Float on back, tuck to rotate, float on front to regain standing
- Perform a log roll from the back to the front
- Perform a log roll from the front to the back
- Exit the water without support

Stage 3
Beginner
Progressions:
- Jump in from poolside and submerge
- Push and glide and transition into frontcrawl
- Push and glide and transition into backstroke
- 10 metres recognisable frontcrawl without goggles
- 10m recognisable backstroke without goggles
- Fully submerge to pick up an object
- Perform a tuck float and hold for three seconds
- Push and glide on the back, arms extended and log roll onto front
- Push and glide on the front, arms extended and log roll onto back
- Travel 2 widths of a recognisable frontcrawl attempting side breathing
- Travel 2 widths of a recognisable backstroke
- Exit the water without using steps

Stage 3+
Beginner +
Progressions:
- Travel 5 metres on front, tuck up and rotate onto back and return on back
- Travel 5 metres on back, tuck up and rotate onto front and return on front
- Sink, push and glide on front in a streamlined position
- Sink, push and glide on back in a streamlined position
- Perform a sitting dive into a streamlined position
- Fully submerge to swim through a hoop
- Correctly identify 3 of the 4 key water safety messages
- Always swim in a safe place
- Always swim with an adult
- If you fall in, float, breathe, relax
- If someone else is in trouble, call 999 or 112
- Demonstrate a treading water type action
- Demonstrate head first sculling on back
- Travel 2 widths using a dolphin leg action
- Travel 2 widths using a breaststroke type leg action
- Travel 20 metres of a recognisable frontcrawl and backstroke

Stage 4
Improver
Progressions:
- Kick 20 metres backstroke
- Kick 20 metres frontcrawl
- Kick 10 metres breaststroke on the front
- Kick 10 metres butterfly
- Travel on back, log roll in one continuous movement onto front
- Travel on front, log roll in one continuous movement onto back
- Push and glide from the wall towards the pool floor
- Head first sculling action for 5 metres, flat on back
- Perform a kneeling dive into a streamlined position
- 3 different shapes whilst floating on the surface
- Swim 2 lengths frontcrawl with side breathing
- Swim 2 lengths backstroke with high hips

Stage 5
Improver +
Progressions:
- Perform a standing dive
- 100 metres of choice stroke (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 20 metres frontcrawl (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 20 metres backstroke (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 20 metres breaststroke (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 10 metres butterfly (Swim England standard)
- Perform a flat stationary scull on the back
- 10 metres feet first sculling action on the back
- Sculling sequence with partner for 45 seconds including a rotation
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- 3 different shaped jumps into deep water
- Perform all touch turns to Swim England standard
- Handstand and hold for a minimum of three seconds
- Perform a forward somersault
- Demonstrate an action for getting help

Stage 6
Platinum 60
Progressions:
- Understand why it is important and how to exercise
- Sink, push and glide, kick and rotate into backstroke
- Sink, push and glide, kick and rotate into front crawl
- Swim 10 metres wearing clothes
- Push and glide and swim 40 metres frontcrawl, including rhythmical breaths (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 40 metres breaststroke, including rhythmical breaths (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 40 metres backstroke, including regular breaths (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 20 metres butterfly, including rhythmical breaths
- Push and glide and swim 20 metres frontcrawl to include a forward somersault
- Perform a ‘shout and signal’ rescue
- Perform a dive & transition into a stroke

Stage 7
Platinum 60
Progressions:
- Push and glide and swim 60 metres backstroke (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 60 metres frontcrawl including tumble turns (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 60 metres breaststroke including touch turns (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 20 metres butterfly (Swim England standard)
- In groups, 3 skills including sculling, rotation, floating, or eggbeater
- Perform a dive from a diving block
- Push and glide and swim 100 metres of one choice stroke (Swim England standard)
- Push and glide and swim 200 metres using 3 different strokes (Swim England standard)
- Tread water using eggbeater action for 30 seconds
- Obstacle course, 4 different objects, feet off floor

Stage 8
Performance 60
Progressions:
- Complete a set lasting 400 metres (e.g. 16x25m, 8x50m, 4x100m) on a specific turnaround time agreed by the teacher or coach
- Swim 400 metres continuously using one stroke (Swim England standard) including turns
- Push and streamline then kick 40 metres backstroke with or without using a board
- Push and streamline then kick 40 metres breaststroke with or without using a board
- Push and streamline then kick 40 metres butterfly without using a board
- Push and streamline then kick 40 metres frontcrawl with or without using a board
- Perform a backstroke turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out
- Perform a breaststroke turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out
- Perform a butterfly turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out
- Perform a front crawl turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out
- Track or grab start including streamlined underwater fly kick for 10 metres

Stage 9
Performance 60
Progressions:
- Complete a set lasting 800 metres (e.g. 16x50m, 8x100m, 4x200m) on a specific turnaround time agreed by the teacher or coach
- Swim 800 metres continuously using one stroke (Swim England standard), including turns
- Swim a continuous 4×1 individual medley (Swim England standard)
- Perform a 15 metre underwater kick on front from a push and glide in a streamlined position
- Backstroke start, underwater streamlined fly kick to a max of 15 metres, transition into backstroke for 1 length
- Frontcrawl start, underwater streamlined fly kick to a max of 15 metres, transition into frontcrawl for 1 length
- Butterfly start, underwater streamlined fly kick to a max of 15 metres, transition into butterfly for 1 length
- Breaststroke start, underwater streamlined A Pull to a max of 15 metres, transition into stroke for 1 length

Stage 10
Performance 60
Progressions:
- Complete a set lasting 1600 metres (e.g. 16x100m, 8x200m, 4x400m) on a specific timed turnaround set by the teacher or coach
- Swim 1 mile (1610 metres) continuously using a choice of strokes (Swim England standard), including turns
- Perform a continuous 4×1 individual medley kick without using a kick board
- Swim a continuous 4×2 individual medley using recognised turns
- Perform a frontcrawl relay take over – as an incoming swimmer
- Perform a frontcrawl relay take over – as an outgoing swimmer
